What is Vedic Maths?

Vedic Maths, derived from ancient Indian scriptures, is not just a collection of tricks. It's a structured, powerful way to solve mathematical problems quickly and accurately. It works on 16 sutras (or principles) & 13 Sub sutras, and the beauty lies in its simplicity. Over the years, I’ve guided hundreds of students preparing for Competitive Exams like JEE, NDA, CLATCAT, GRE and UPSC, and I’ve seen how Vedic Maths can transform their approach to mathematics..

Benefits for Competitive Exams:

  1. Speed and Accuracy: One of the biggest challenges in competitive exams is solving questions under tight time constraints. Vedic Maths helps tremendously with this. Techniques like the "Vertically and Crosswise" method for multiplication can dramatically cut down your time to solve problems, without compromising accuracy. In exams like JEE or CAT, where even seconds matter, this can be a game-changer.
  2. Reduction of Complexity: I’ve worked with students who struggled with topics like algebra or trigonometry, especially under exam pressure. What Vedic Maths does is that it simplifies these complex problems. Instead of getting bogged down by traditional methods, you’ll find that with the right Vedic techniques, topics like algebraic equations, square roots, and calculus are easier to tackle. This is especially helpful in exams like CAT, GRE & JEE, where numerical questions can often appear daunting.
  3. Time Management: Time management can make or break your exam. In all competitive exams, you have a limited window to solve a massive number of questions. Vedic Maths helps you manage time better by simplifying calculations, which leaves more time for difficult questions. By applying these techniques, I’ve seen my students cut down their solving time by up to 50%.

Key Vedic Maths Techniques:

  1. Multiplication: The "Vertically and Crosswise" method is one of my personal favourites, and it’s perfect for exams like SSC CGL, IBPS PO, and JEE. This technique allows you to perform multiplication of large numbers in your head, faster than the conventional method. I show my students how they can multiply two-digit, three-digit numbers in seconds without writing down lengthy steps. For example, multiplying 34 × 25 can be done mentally using this method:
    1. Multiply the units digits: 4 × 5 = 20. Write down 0, carry over 2.
    2. Cross-multiply the outer and inner pairs: (3 × 5) + (4 × 2) = 15 + 8 = 23. Add the carry over (2), making it 25. Write down 5, carry over 2.
    3. Multiply the tens digits: 3 × 2 = 6. Add the carry (2), making it 8.

The answer is 850 in seconds!

Not only that, but I also explain how to do big multiplications of 6-digit and 7-digit numbers in seconds in my course. Imagine being able to multiply 99999 × 74856 = 7485525144 without breaking a sweat—this is the kind of speed and accuracy that students can achieve with the right techniques.

    Big multiplication in seconds
  2. Division: In exams like GATE and UPSC, quick and efficient division is essential. The "Nikhilam Sutra" is perfect for this. It allows you to divide numbers in a fraction of the time you’d need using regular long division. For example, using the Nikhilam Sutra to divide 98 by 9:
    1. Subtract the divisor (9) from a base like 10: 10 - 9 = 1.
    2. Write the first digit of the dividend (9) as it is.
    3. Multiply this digit by the base (1) and subtract it from the next digit of the dividend: 8 - 9 × 1 = -1.

This gives you 10 as the quotient and -1 as the remainder, which can be adjusted quickly.

Another exciting method is the remainder trick by 9, where you can easily find the remainder of a division by summing the digits of a number. For instance, for 238 divided by 9, adding the digits (2 + 3 + 8 = 13, and 1 + 3 = 4) tells us that the remainder is 4, These tricks are extremely helpful for competitive exams I have explained many more methods like these  in my course-  Vedic Maths For Competitive Exams.
  3. Square Roots and Cube Roots: Finding square and cube roots quickly is crucial for many exams, including UPSC ,NDA & CDSVedic Maths offers techniques that make this process smooth and simple. For example, using Vedic Maths to find the square root of 2025:
    1. Break the number into smaller parts: 2025 is close to 2025 = (45 × 45).
    2. You can quickly identify that 45 is the square root of 2025.

This gives you the answer in seconds, without needing a calculator!

Imagine solving square and cube roots like this within seconds, giving you more time to focus on tougher questions. These methods are easy to learn and apply under exam pressure.

  4. Checking Answers: I always tell my students that verifying your answers is just as important as solving the problem itself, especially in competitive exams. Vedic Maths offers some brilliant techniques for quick verification, ensuring your answers are accurate. For example, using the digit sum method to verify multiplication, let's say you’ve multiplied 123 × 45 and got 5535 as the answer:
    1. Find the digit sum of 123: 1 + 2 + 3 = 6.
    2. Find the digit sum of 45: 4 + 5 = 9.
    3. Multiply the digit sums: 6 × 9 = 54, and then 5 + 4 = 9.
    4. Now find the digit sum of the answer (5535): 5 + 5 + 3 + 5 = 18, and then 1 + 8 = 9.

Since both the product of the digit sums and the digit sum of the answer are 9, your solution is correct! This quick verification technique helps avoid mistakes and boosts confidence in your final answers.

Where Can You Use Vedic Maths in Competitive Exams?

Vedic Maths is incredibly versatile and can be applied across several categories, such as:

  • Quantitative Aptitude: For exams like CAT, GRE, CLAT, NDA, CDS, IBPS PO, SBI PO, SSC CGL etc. you’ll breeze through the numerical section.
  • Engineering Mathematics: For JEE, GATE, and ESE, Vedic Maths can help you solve complex problems faster and more efficiently.
  • Medical Entrance Exams: In NEET, where timing is everything, using Vedic Maths can significantly cut down your solving time in numerically heavy questions of Physics & Chemistry.
