Vedic Maths Facts: Amazing Tricks for Fast Calculation

As a Vedic Maths coach and the founder of Welcome2Maths, I’ve seen how this incredible system changes the way students engage with numbers. 1. Vedic Maths Is Based on 16 Sutras

  The entire system of Vedic Maths is built on just 16 Sutras (formulae) and 13 sub-sutras, making complex problems simpler and faster than conventional methods. Here are a few powerful sutras with examples:  

 Ekadhikena Purvena (One More than the Previous)

This sutra is used for multiplying numbers near a base, especially for numbers like 73 × 77 (both close to 75).

✅ Example: 73 × 77

  • Identify the base: Nearest base is 75
  • Find the difference: 73 is 2 less, 77 is 2 more
  • Apply the formula: 83 × 87 = ( 8 + 1 ) × 8 ∣ ( 3 × 7 ) 73 \times 77 = (7+1) \times 7 | (3 \times 7) 73×77=(7+1)×7∣(3×7) = 9 × 8 ∣ 21 = 8 \times 7 | 21 =8×7∣21 = 72∣ 21 = 7221 = 56 | 21 = 5621 =56∣21=5621

So, 73 × 77 = 5621 in seconds!

🔹 Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah (All from 9 and Last from 10)

This sutra helps in multiplying numbers close to powers of 10, such as 97 × 98.

✅ Example: 97 × 98

  • Base: 100
  • Deviations:
    • 97 is 3 less (-3)
    • 98 is 2 less (-2)
  • Apply the formula:
    • Left part: 97 - 2 = 95
    • Right part: (-3) × (-2) = 06
    97 × 98 = 9506 97 \times 98 = 9506 97×98=9506

So, 97 × 98 = 9506 instantly!

🔹 Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam (Vertically and Crosswise)

A general multiplication sutra that simplifies multiplication of any two numbers.

✅ Example: 12 × 23
Multiply in three steps:

  1. Multiply unit digits: 2 × 3 = 6
  2. Cross multiply and add: ( 1 × 3 ) + ( 2 × 2 ) = 3 + 4
    =3+4 =7
  3. Multiply tens digits: 1 × 2 = 2

Final answer: 276
